How do I know if my dog is stressed?
Dogs cannot tell us how they are feeling and coping, but they let us know by changing their behaviour. They can easily show stress in many ways - some are much more easily recognised than others.
Stress can sometimes be difficult to recognise, as some dogs show stress by subtle 'withdrawal behaviours'. They may interact less, hide away and perhaps stop going into certain parts of the house.
Signs of stress
- House soiling
- Increased or decreased interaction with other people or other pets
- Habits such as excessive grooming
- Reduced appetite
- Changes in the use of their environment
- Sleep disturbances
- Reduced play
- Posture - large pupils, lowered stance
- Changed demeanour
What can I do for my dog?
If you think your dog may be stressed, first see your veterinary surgeon. Your vet will tell you if there is a medical cause for the behaviour - this may involve tests e.g. blood or urine tests. Your vet will discuss management options with you which may include behaviour modification techniques.
